It's actually better to burn it in vehicles as a fuel than to just let it go into the atmosphere. It can also come from landfills and sewage treatment plants, and it often comes up with oil from the ground. I have 2 cars that run on natural gas right now instead of gasoline. Nuclear power is environmentally friendly but I don't expect you'd hear favorable comments if you put that on your artwork. There is tidal power, even slow-moving streams and rivers can be tapped as energy sources with technology now being developed so you could use that, and Britain has tidal plants in operation I believe. If it doesn't have to be a fuel source you could use human-powered devices like a bike, walking shoe or hand-crank flashlight or radio to demonstrate a way to avoid fossil fuels. How about biodiesel? A canola field, nice and yellow and quite impressive. Go to and do a search for biodiesel, you will turn up lots of stock photos that you can get ideas from.
